Research offers insight to how fructose causes obesity and other illness

ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2012) ? A group of scientists from across the world have come together in a just-published study that provides new insights into how fructose causes obesity and metabolic syndrome, more commonly known as diabetes. In this study which was performed in lab animals, researchers found that fructose can be metabolized by an enzyme that exists in two forms. One form appears to be responsible for causing how fructose causes fatty liver, obesity, and insulin resistance. The other form may actually protect animals from developing these features in response to sugar.

These studies may provide important insights into the cause of the prediabetic condition known as "metabolic syndrome," which currently affects more than one-quarter of adults in the United States.

The study, "Opposing effects of fructokinase C and A isoforms on fructose-induced metabolic syndrome in mice" was just published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Richard Johnson, MD, the senior author of the study and Chief of the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension at the University of Colorado School of Medicine said the findings are significant because we now have a better understanding of how fructose causes obesity and other illnesses.

"These studies provide new insights into how fructose may contribute to the development of obesity and diabetes. In particular, the identification of contrasting roles for two enzymes that are involved in fructose metabolism was surprising and could be important in understanding why some individuals may be more sensitive to the metabolic effects of fructose than others."

Previous research has shown that fructose intake in added sugars such as sucrose and high fructose corn syrup is strongly linked to the epidemic rise in obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Fructose intake also causes features of metabolic syndrome in laboratory animals and humans. It is known to cause visceral (organ) fat accumulation and insulin resistance compared to starch based diets even when calories are kept even.

Discharged from Hospital - and How to Not Go Back! | Elder Care ...

Hospital sign, Re-admissions, Home Care, Medicare, Boca Home Care, Palm Beach County?Come the Fall of 2012 and into 2013 Hospitals and Physicans will be held accountable for preventable hospital re-admissions. Some penalties will be imposed n order to reduce these events. Careful planning post discharge is key to keeping you on the road to recovery and out of the Hospital.

?

Discharging from the hospital and NOT going back in is a goal of nearly every hospital Discharge Planner,?Patient, Family Member, Medicare Home Health Agency and Private Duty Care.? Come October,2012 Hospitals will face a monetary penalty for preventable re admissions within 30 days of discharge.

Due to the exorbinant expenses, need for better discharge planning and follow through, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service (CMS) will penalize doctors & hospitals that have a high thirty day readmission rate.

The goal is noble and necessary to maintain better health and reduce medical costs. However, once the patient leaves the hospital it is up to them and family to see the Discharge Plan is implemented. All those papers you get when you leave the hospital, and often end up in your laundry bag, or trash are the key discharge papers of your plan. It will have your condition, hospital stay dates, Medications, new prescriptions, equipment orders an recommended follow up visits to your doctor. Truly unfortunate these papers may never be looked at once the patient gets home.

The Hospital Discharge plan ner will likely go over instructions with you but you may be preoccupied with getting home, weak or under influence of medications and not really absorbing the information, or you may have confusion or a memory disorder. It is crucial to do the follow up orders to greatly reduce the chance of hospital readmission.

Boca Home Care Services strongly recommends someone is with you when you are being discharged. Someone to ask questions and review the information about new medications, prescriptions to be ordered or picked up, follow up doctor appointments or tests to be made. Diet restrictions, amount of physical activity to do or avoid and so forth.

It is really a combination of a few things which can make for a positive outcome? after discharge. Family, the Nurse from Medicare Home Health agency and even a home care aide. Between the three groups working together, hospital re-admission within the first thirty days can be almost eliminated. Family can make arrangements and appointments, the Registered Nurse will review the medical side of things and teach the family member and or aide how to proceed. They will also order in the physical or other therapies as needed and perform wound care and other treatments. The aide or caregiver can provide companionship, medication prompts, transportation to doctors, do the laundry, shopping and cooking in order to let you regain your strength.

The key pieces of a successful discharge are: review of Medications, Follow up visits to doctors and diet/exercise. The compliance of all three is where things usually fall apart and then the you are at risk of going back to the hospital.

If family is not available, they ought to work closely with the home care companies and consider hiring, even short term, a Care Manager who will even go to the doctor with you. It is crucial that you receive the discharge orders, understand them, make arrangements to do them and then follow through by doing them.? Hospitals and doctors may have to be made more accountable but once you leave the hospital, there isn?t much they an do to make you comply. If you need help to do so, then make arrangements with friends, family and hire it. Your health and well being are at stake.

Kodak _ and film _ saying goodbye to the Oscars

(AP) ? Each year at the Oscars ceremony, Hollywood says goodbye to stars and filmmakers who've died. This year, the award show will bid adieu to the Kodak Theatre.

Just a decade ago, the glamorous 3,300-seat venue was touted as the Oscars' first permanent home, but the 131-year-old Eastman Kodak Co. has forfeited its sponsorship of the venue as it struggles with bankruptcy.

The move symbolizes Kodak's fading star power in Hollywood. Although seven of the nine "Best Picture" nominees were shot on Kodak film, the industry's increasing use of digital editing and projection has ravaged the company's printing business.

About half of the world's commercial screens now show movies from digital projectors, and by some estimates, film reels will soon be a thing of the past.

"35-millimeter is coming to the end of its life," said David Hancock, head of film and cinema for research firm IHS Screen Digest. "In four years' time there will be no film printing business."

Kodak film has long been a favorite of cinematographers. But more and more movies are shot using digital cameras, and the notion of a "cutting-room floor" littered with celluloid scraps has given way to studios with computerized tools such as Avid Technology Inc.'s Avid DS and Apple Inc.'s Final Cut Pro.

At their peak, motion pictures accounted for more than 12 billion feet of film processing each year, enough to reach the moon and back five times, according to IHS. This year, IHS predicts film processing will shrink to about 4 billion feet as an increasing number of theaters receive their "films" by satellite or via hard drives delivered by courier.

"We no longer ship (film) to most theaters," Philippe Dauman, chief executive of Paramount Pictures owner Viacom Inc., told a conference last month. "We have helped them implement digital distribution so we don't have to make so many prints."

The billions of dollars that major studios save on film ? and its costly ingredient, silver ? has resulted in revenue declines for the Kodak division that once accounted for the vast majority of the company's overall revenue.

In the first half of 2011, revenue from the division that makes motion picture stock film was $763 million, about half the $1.57 billion it posted in the same period in 2008.

Film printing volume was crucial to Kodak. Although it takes about 1 million feet to shoot a feature film, studios need about 100 million feet to print enough copies for the widest of North American releases.

Kodak sees its future in commercial imaging devices and printing. Still, the motion picture business is significant, accounting for somewhere under a quarter of its revenues. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January with $6.7 billion in debt.

Kodak is unable to afford the marketing boost the Oscars once gave it.

Last week, a bankruptcy court judge approved its early exit from a 20-year naming rights deal it signed with Kodak Theatre owner CIM Group in 1999. As a result, Kodak won't have to pay the $3.6 million annual naming fee.

The Kodak Theatre, which was custom-built for the awards show and first played host to the ceremony in 2002, will be described to millions of viewers on Sunday simply as the "Hollywood & Highland Center."

The judge's decision came too late to remove the signs outside, which may cast a sense of gloom over an industry already rocked by technological change.

"I think everyone looks at Kodak's name coming off the theater with a degree of sadness mixed with respect," said Chris McGurk, chief executive of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., which installs digital projectors for thousands of movie screens and is getting into the business of putting live video feeds into theaters. "It's just that the tide has shifted. The digital rollout is moving great guns. It's unfortunate that the great companies that helped build the film business can't all be part of it going forward."

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which declined to comment for this story, is reportedly considering a move to a different venue.

The Academy won't suffer financially from the unpaid fee, since it doesn't have a direct relationship with Kodak and most of its $100 million annual budget comes from licensing the Oscar ceremony's broadcast, according to Moody's Investors Service. The Academy leases the space from CIM Group.

It's not as if Kodak didn't see the digital future coming. Last October, Kodak licensed its patented laser projection technology to Imax Corp. to allow digital projectors to work in domes and other huge theaters that were once reserved for film.

Even if its name is gone from the Oscars, Kodak will still be a part of filmmaking, as long as Academy voters continue to pick movies with that rich, grainy "film look." Kodak stock film was used to shoot Oscar-nominated movies such as "War Horse," ''The Tree of Life," and "The Help," even though the captured images were converted for digital editing and delivery.

Mark Graziano, senior vice president of post-production at "War Horse" maker DreamWorks Studios, said the end of the sponsorship serves as a reminder of the "lost art" of film production, and of the workers who once had titles like "negative cutter." It used to take two weeks, for example, just to prepare a rough cut for studio executives to view in screening rooms. The process is nearly instantaneous now.

"It makes you nostalgic for the days when we only worked with 35-millimeter film," Graziano said, noting that film still has a place at many studios. "You look at many filmmakers that swear by film capture, their movies always look gorgeous. It's hard to turn your back on that."

Online Patient Communities Garner Interest at Social Media Week ...

I was honoured to represent the healthcare sector at Social Media Week Toronto. For the SMWTO official lauch event, PulseCheck, organizers invited 10 representatives from 10 industries to?present a 5-minute candid point of view on the status of their industry on the social web ? only 3 slides allowed. I choose to talk about online patient communities, the role of providers in patient sharing online and ?infoveillance?. I was surprised to realize how new these concepts were to so many people not involved in health care social media conversations.?But it resonated loudly and clearly, encouraging us to keep talking about it.

Yes, an online community! From that community of peers, Dave found information that couldn?t be found anywhere else on credible information websites. He was told about a treatment that sometimes works. Community members were quick to point out that the treatment often doesn?t work and that?s why most hospitals don?t offer it and won?t tell you about it. He opted to try the treatment and sought out a cancer centre where he could get the chemotherapy. His last treatment was July 23, 2007, and by September it was clear he was in remission.

For many, Dave is the epitome of an e-patient. While you may be quick to assume e equals electronic, it doesn?t. The e-patient is equipped, enabled, empowered and engaged in their health and healthcare decisions. They have moved mountains via the social web for their own health and the health of others.

Participatory medicineThe Social Web for Participatory Health
Providers who recognize the value of collective health knowledge are pioneering participatory medicine and accepting patients and caregivers as respected and equal partners in their care.

Understanding the potential of peer-to-peer health has led to social health innovation in patient-provider communication and patient self-care. There are too many innovations to mention today, but I?ll touch on a few quickly.

Dr. Joseph Cafazzo and his team at Centre for Global eHealth Innovation at Toronto?s University Health Network partnered with SickKids Hospital to develop BANT, an iPhone app for teenagers with type 1 diabetes. It allows them to capture, store and analyze their glucose readings, and facilitates sharing this information with their healthcare providers. But just as importantly, they can connect with others like them in the diabetes community and take part in gamification activities that encourage their self-care.

Shared electronic health records like Sunnybrook?s MyChart allow patients and their healthcare providers access to their health information as well as to social sharing tools like clinic notes, personal social networks, medical networks and e-messaging.

The Social Web for Public Health
Social health innovation has also been a driver in public health.

Dr. Gunter Eysenbach?s research into the analysis of search, communication and publication behaviour on the Internet led to a fundamental change to global health surveillance. Thanks to this senior scientist from the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, epidemic intelligence now flows not only through government organizations but also through informal channels, ranging from press reports to social media streams to analyses of Web searches.(2) (3)

For example, when Rumi Chunara, research fellow at Harvard Medical School, and his team analyzed news and Twitter feeds during the early days of the cholera epidemic in Haiti in 2010, they were able to mine for valuable information on the outbreak up to two weeks ahead of surveillance reports issued by the government health ministry. Such social media surveillance has become much more mainstream and encourage development of free tools like healthmap.org and Outbreaks Near Me.

Conclusion
Healthcare providers remain the experts in disease, but recognize that we are the experts in ourselves. Trained professionals give us information and recommended actions to help us

  • stay out of the kingdom of the sick,
  • leave the kingdom of the sick, or
  • live the best quality of life in the kingdom of the sick.

But, it is social health that has increased our ability to quickly and easily get information and support to help us manage our care, our health and our living as it applies to our individual situation. That means we can share not only with people like us, but also collaborate with people who may know more than we do and help inform people who haven?t been there yet.

How Did Aretha Franklin React to Whitney Houston's Death?

In the wake of Whitney Houston's death, the public has heard numerous responses from those that knew the legend well (Ray J) to know those speculating wildly in order to increase ratings (Nancy Grace).

But few were closer to Houston than Aretha Franklin, the artist's godmother. She spoke to The Today Show this morning about actually hearing the tragic news.

"I had just finished watching George Clooney in The Descendants and I flipped back to the regular TV and maybe two minutes after I did that, it came across the screen. I just jumped off the side of the bed [and said] 'What?' This could not be. What is this? I just said, 'Oh my, God.'"

Aretha Franklin on Today

Franklin said she had seen previews for Sparkle, a film Houston had recently completed shooting, and was confident the movie would lead to a comeback.

"She looked fresh, she looked healthy and she looked gorgeous," the iconic singer said. "I thought, 'Yes, she has conquered her challenges and she's on the way.'"

Aretha will sing at Houston's funeral tomorrow and hopes the public doesn't focus on "the challenges" her goddaughter faced, but, instead, on all the positive aspects of her life.

She even penned the following lyrics to memorialize Houston:

Twinkle twinkle superstar/We don't wonder where you are/Up above the world so bright/Like a diamond in the night/Twinkle twinkle she stood alone/I can't believe that she's gone.

Your Home Improvement Can Be Jump Started By Turning To ...

Home Improvement Methods ? Unique And Green Cleaner Tips While it is easy to get lost in some subjects, there is so much with kit homes that you will need to prioritize what you feel will be useful to you. This is one of those situations that if you are not aware of the need to know more, then there really is no compelling reason to look for it. While that may be an obvious point, the sometimes equally important issues are lying out in the wings and are often overlooked. Following this comprehensive approach will ultimately enable you to function much more competently only because you will know what needs to be understood. While some information can look a little intimidating at first, depending on what you bring to the table, you are of course more than capable of understanding the issues involved. Your home can be improved very easily by simply doing some home cleaning. When you decide that you want to improve the state of your home by cleaning it, you should use methods that are green or environmentally friendly. Anyone living in your home, including your animals, can be in danger, if you use traditional cleaning products, which contain chemicals, as part of your cleaning methods. Green cleaning methods are good for your home, and this article will point out some valuable tips. If you think those points on marketing gold coast are something, then there is more to read as you know plus tons elsewhere. By all means, do not stop with what you are learning here today; that would be a shame. We have always found that the more we learn about something, there are opportunities that become apparent that we did not know about. Knowledge really does empower people, when they use it, and yes we know that may sound a little cliche. We think you will agree that added understanding is one of the true paths to personal freedom. Do you still use paper towels when you clean? Stop doing it! You have been told how bad paper towels are for the environment for decades. Your budget doesn?t need the expense. Use washcloths to clean up your messes, rather than paper towels. You never have to spend money to get new ones. You can make them fairly easily using old t-shirts and other clothing that you have cleaned out of your closet. Any time they get too dirty or start to smell, rinse them out and wash them with your regular laundry. This is a good way to save some money off of the budget, along with doing something good for the environment by eliminating trash. Environmentally friendly paint should be used in place of VOC paint that you may have on your existing walls. This acronym, VOC, stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. These are compounds that form vapors at room temperatures and can contribute quite a bit to indoor air pollution. You might want to consider that the indoor pollution will escape into the surrounding environment, causing the outdoor air to get worse as well. This risk is now limited due to low VOC limitations for paint that is manufactured today. Be careful of other potential toxic chemicals that can be in paint. Some of the best paints to use include Dutch-Boy, Benjamin Moore and Bioshield Milk Paint to name a few. Going green can be best described by how many green houseplants you have added to your home. People buy houseplants for their looks, but they are more important than that. Their main work is to purify the air and be an air filter. Some people use fake plants made out of rubber, which don?t do much good, but an actual rubber plant will, along with English Ivy, peace lilies and spider plants, because of their cleansing properties. These plants take in the toxins from the air and put out pure oxygen. How many plants you will need is dependent on the size of your house, but more is better than less. Plants are much better environmentally in cleaning your home than air filters and purifiers. So many people overlook the fact that how you clean matters just as much as whether or not you clean. Before you choose any home improvement project, start with a thorough cleaning. The health of your home, along with your own, will be made better by using green techniques for cleaning. It is quite normal to come across or encounter some types of challenging considerations with wedding banners ? that has already been experienced by so many. Everybody likes to talk about info overload, and that is really a serious issue in this regard. There is nothing unusual at all about conflicts between points of view and what people find in their own research. So that is why when you are talking about anything marketing-related, or something similar, then you really need to exercise due diligence in all respects. After awhile you will become very adept at separating truth from fiction.

Column: Not every Ivy Leaguer becomes an NBA star

President Barack Obama, accompanied by Education Secretary Arne Duncan speaks about No Child Left Behind, Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, in the East Room of the White House in Washington. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

The names "Jeremy Lin" and "Harvard" pop up in the same sentence so often lately you might think every Ivy Leaguer who chases the dream winds up in the NBA.

Not so. Nearly all of them must face reality sooner or later and learn to make do in less glamorous occupations, such as Wall Street CEO, legal titan or even secretary of education. But none of them minds basking in Lin's reflected glory.

"I followed Jeremy since he was a kid, and I always knew he'd amount to something," chuckled Arne Duncan, a former Harvard basketball captain who really is the U.S. Secretary of Education. "It's been amazing to watch. It shows that if you keep working and people pay attention, there are plenty of diamonds out there just waiting to be discovered."

Duncan doesn't count himself as one of those diamonds, though he played in the U.S. Basketball League after graduation, then had a cup of coffee at the Boston Celtics' training camp and played pro basketball in Australia for four years before launching his public-service career. Duncan might have stayed on the other side of the world, too, if the pull of his hometown weren't so strong.

"I was getting paid to do something I loved. I was comfortable, and being honest, if I'd stayed for another year, I'd probably be there still," he said. "It sounds corny, but because of the way I was raised ... and all the mentors who invested so much, I felt an obligation to come back and help."

As if Ivy League grads lacked bragging rights, Lin's worldwide celebrity has provided them with yet another gift. More than a few can boast of having better nights playing against the Knicks' sudden sensation than Kobe Bryant or anyone else in the NBA has so far.

"I know this sounds crazy now, but there were three guys just on our team I would have taken over him any day of the week," said Cornell senior guard Chris Wroblewski. "I wasn't super impressed."

Wroblewski, who was named Ivy League rookie of the year in 2008-09 largely because of his defensive skills, was glued to Lin home-and-away during each of his first two seasons with the Big Red.

"The game I remember is my sophomore year at home, when both teams were pretty good and people started calling it the 'clash of the Ivy League titans,'" he said.

(Considering how little attention the rest of the basketball world normally affords Ivy League games that might be an overstatement. But back to the story.)

"He was the focal point in our scouting report, and we made it a priority to limit his touches. I think he had 16 points, but eight turnovers, too, and we beat them here by 36," Wroblewski recalled. "It's fair to say I'm not the fastest guy, so I had my concerns even then whether he could get around guys in the NBA.

"That shows you much I know."

Yet Wroblewski knows enough to have lined up a job in finance back near his home in suburban Chicago when he graduates this spring. Of the three Cornell teammates he figured would get their NBA shot ahead of Lin, Ryan Wittman, the unanimous Ivy League player of the year selection in 2009-10 and the son of Wizards coach Randy Wittman, is already working for Morgan Stanley in Minneapolis. The other two are still sticking it out in pro basketball's rough-and-tumble lower circuits. Louis Dale plays in Germany, and Jeff Foote, who bounced around with teams in Israel, Spain and Poland and was in camp briefly with the NBA's Portland Trailblazers last fall, is playing for the Springfield Armor in the D-League.

"The good thing about going to an Ivy League school is you've got a lot of options after getting your degree, and a lot of them more lucrative than basketball, especially where I'm at," Foote said. "You get a good starting salary with say Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley, and maybe 10 or 20 years down the road you wind up even better off. The bad thing is that people assumed you played in the Ivy League because you weren't good enough to get an athletic scholarship anywhere else."

Foote takes some pride in knowing that in corporate offices across the country, guys like him are enjoying rare moments of celebrity again. Suddenly, many of the financial planners, insurance agents and accountants who work alongside them can't hear enough about the night one of them stared down Jeremy Lin.

"Honestly? I don't remember much about it," Foote said. "We beat them pretty handily. I knew he'd get an opportunity, but I expected the only way he'd catch on was maybe as a backup point guard. I hope his success makes a lot of people look at the league differently."

Duncan thinks so, too, but he's hoping there's a bigger lesson to be learned from Linsanity.

"The best thing about Jeremy's story is it shows you don't always have to have pedigree or be a McDonald's All-American to get where you want to go. If you work hard and you've got humility, and what matters to you is making the team better, you can find a way to contribute.

"Look," Duncan said, "Jeremy is a very special kid, but it isn't about the numbers he puts up. The Knicks were ? how should I put it ? a dysfunctional group, and he made them a team. He's been held to low numbers plenty of times, but the only thing he ever cared about were 'Ws.' Find guys like that," he said finally, "and success isn't usually far behind."

Leipzig's Musical Treasures | Music | Arts & Entertainment | Epoch ...

LEIPZIG, Germany?Leipzig has established its international musical credentials, from chamber concerts to orchestral productions, from opera arias to choir cantatas, the city has again taken its place as one of the world?s great music capitals?not surprising given its history.

Leipzig has always been one of Europe?s great musical cities. Bach, Mendelssohn, Clara Wieck, Schumann, Grieg, Wagner, and Mahler, all lived and worked here.

During the lifetime of the German Democratic Republic, Leipzig?s musical luster languished but with German Reunification in 1989, a growing number of visitors have rediscovered the city?s musical treasures.

Key to this renaissance have been the twin pillars of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, founded in 1743, and the St. Thomas Boys? Choir, founded in 1212. Each institution has provided a platform for the composition and performance of music now recognized around the world.

Conductors like Felix Mendelssohn, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Bruno Walter, Kurt Masur, and Riccardo Chailly have made the Gewandhaus one of the most important orchestras in the world.

The St. Thomas Boys? Choir is particularly renowned as the choral group for which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote incomparable music for 27 years.

Bach lies buried in the chancel of St. Thomas Church where he was kapellmeister and his statue decorates its courtyard. Across from the church, stands the Bachhaus or Bach Museum, a composite of a Baroque era building and contemporary interior design. Inside visitors can examine manuscripts and memorabilia from Bach?s life and a collection of historical instruments, including an organ used by the composer.

Cutting edge technical devices fill the rooms like a light table showing digitized documents from Bach?s career that can be manipulated for closer examination. Hanging chairs equipped with earphones allow visitors to curl up and listen to individual pieces of Bach?s music.

That music owes a great debt to 19th-century composer Felix Mendelssohn, who happened across forgotten Bach manuscripts while rummaging in the city archives and rescued them from performance oblivion. Appointed conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1835, Mendelssohn reintroduced not only Bach but Franz Schubert to the world by playing their music regularly.

The Mendelssohn Museum in Leipzig is the only one dedicated solely to this important and influential composer. Located at Goldschmidstrasse 12, the museum occupies the first floor apartment where Mendelssohn lived with his wife Cecile and their children the last two years of his life. Liszt came here to visit and so did Wagner and the Schumanns and the apartment echoes with the memories of their music.

Using contemporary watercolor sketches of the d?cor that existed during the composer?s lifetime, the apartment has been meticulously restored. Next to Cecile?s cool apple green parlor, the composer?s study, painted a sunny yellow, is flooded with light. His piano sits against one wall surrounded by personal mementoes, watercolors that he painted himself and pieces of his music.

In another room, a score for his great oratorio, Elijah, rests in a glass case near a plaster cast of his hand and photographs of the Swedish singer Jennie Lind, the great love of his life. One room of the apartment has been set up as a concert hall and regular performances of Mendelssohn?s music are held on Sunday mornings just as they were during the composer?s lifetime.

A contemporary of Mendelssohn?s who lived and studied in Leipzig and who married his pianist wife, Clara Wieck, here was composer Robert Schumann. Forbidden to marry by Clara?s father, Clara and Schumann waited until Clara?s 21st birthday to exchange vows and move into a first floor apartment at Inselstrasse 18, now the Schumann Museum.

Once part of a fashionable new suburb, Inselstrasse is only a few minutes walk from the heart of the city. The museum is small, just three rooms, but the spirit of the Schumanns fill the large central chamber where concerts of the composer?s music are held.

Another composer who owes a debt to Felix Mendelssohn is the Norwegian Edvard Grieg. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatory of Music in 1843 and from 1858-62 Grieg was a student there. He frequently visited his publishers at Talstrasse 10, now the Grieg Memorial Centre. It was here in 1888 that he composed his well-known suite of music for Peer Gynt.
